Tree Carvings
This is the custom work which Clyde offers. He will come right
to your house to carve a face in a tree, stump or log.
Clyde began creating these living sculptures in 1995. Since that
time he has carved nearly 900 trees in nine states. When he
carves a live tree it is not harmed. This is because he is careful
not to remove the bark all the way around so that the sap flow
is not cut off. When Clyde began working on trees he only
carved the face of an old bearded man, his "Tree Spirit."
Although the Tree Spirit is still his most popular design he now
does a variety of faces including Indians and girls.
Clyde begins each carving by doing a rough outline with a
chainsaw. He does the details with chisels. It is the detail work
that really brings the carving to life, especially when the eyes
are done. At this point Clyde's work carving the tree is done,
but the art is not finished. As the tree grows the image will age
and change. Like people, the older the carving gets the more
character it acquires. But unlike people, as it ages it doesn't
require a great deal of maintenance. All that is needed is a
yearly coating of wood sealer.
Some useful information:
Clyde only carves faces in trees.

Cost: The cost for most tree carvings is $250 plus travel.
Location: Clyde's normal area is western Pennsylvania and
northeast Ohio. He will travel outside of this range but it will
greatly increase the cost.
Tree Type: The type of tree does not matter. Clyde has
carved just about every type including apple, maple, oak, elm,
pine and willow.
Tree Size: The size of the tree DOES matter if the tree is
alive. The minimum size for a live tree is one with about a 14"
diameter. If you measure around the trunk (circumference)
that will be about 44". The reason Clyde does not normally
carve live trees smaller than this is so the bark does not close
over the carving as the tree grows. For stumps and logs Clyde
will carve almost anything.
